The Faculty of Philology at Uzhhorod National University presented the 47th issue of the anthology “Between the Carpathians and the Tatras”

On September 22, a special event took place at the Faculty of Philology of Uzhhorod National University to mark the 25th anniversary of the literary and artistic translation series “Between the Carpathians and the Tatras” (*Mizh Karpatamy i Tatramy*). Faculty members, scholars, translators, and students discussed the series’ evolution and presented its latest volumes.

Seven students from the Slovak Studies program at Uzhhorod National University worked on the translations: Diana Omelchuk, Yulianna Kudriavtseva, Anastasiia Poliukhovych, Karina Lohoida, Antonina Marko, Kseniia Kovach, and Tetiana Felbaba.

During the presentation, the students read Martina Ivanová’s poems first in Slovak and then in their own Ukrainian translations. The author herself joined the event online.

Nataliia Petritsa, Head of the Department of Slovak Philology at Uzhhorod National University, spoke about the origins of the new volume. She explained that work on the book began within the academic curriculum and gradually evolved into a collaborative creative project involving both the students and the author.

“It was born out of an academic and poetic dialogue: from a lecture that turned into a conversation; from poetry that inspired translation; from a single impromptu translation that sparked dozens of new ones,” Nataliia Petritsa noted. She also emphasized that the value of the new edition lies not only in the translation of the works but also in the opportunity for students to engage in their own creative dialogue with contemporary Slovak poetry.

A distinctive feature of the presentation was that students could showcase not only the finished translation but also the actual process of working with the original text. Comparing the Slovak original with the Ukrainian translation demonstrated how the sound of the poetry changes in another language and highlighted the choices made by the translators.

The presentation of the new edition took place during the 25th anniversary year of the “Between the Carpathians and the Tatras” series. Over this period, the project has evolved from publishing student translations into a series that unites Ukrainian, Slovak, Polish, and other literary traditions. The 47th edition carries this vision forward through a new generation of translators—female students from the Slovak Studies program at Uzhhorod National University.
